“Bon Iver was named best new artist, and Justin Vernon, the creative force behind the band, gave an aw-shucks speech that was rooted in nostalgia for the indie ethics of the 1980s: “When I started to make songs, I did it for the inherent reward of making songs, so I’m a little bit uncomfortable up here.” Definitely, but aren’t ‘indie ethics’ just ‘indie ethics’? Why is an embrace of them necessarily nostalgic? They have their origins in the 1980s, sure, but they also exist today in a way that feels pretty here/now, at least to me (via NYT)
