I just can’t find my place to plug into it.”<br/><br/> - <em>Recently someone was interviewing me about a young female singer-songwriter who is about to release her first record. She asked me the kind of tiresome question of whether or not rock music is still a viable form for a young artist to work in. This question baffles me more as time goes on. If we consider punk in the late 70s to be the first moment in time when lots of women actually felt like they had the agency to use the guitar and voice to express themselves however they wanted, without permission, then there have only been four decades yet of women actively doing this. The quoted text is from the songwriter Connie Converse; they are some of her last known words. She spent the mid-1950s writing exquisite, lonely songs and recording them on a tape machine in her small Greenwich Village apartment. She was deeply depressed and described as “withdrawn” and went missing in 1974 (her father imagines she drove her VW Beetle off a cliff), just years before time would have begun to catch up with her.
