The girl from Dirty Projectors posted this on Twitter today, regarding the use of Robin Pecknold’s thoughts (“THEY ARE THE WORST”) on this Kings of Leon debacle. While I like David Longstreth’s band a fair bit, I can’t help but point out that Amber is totally wrong. Twitter is a public forum. Anything you post to Twitter is on the record, without question. Similarly, anything you post on a public Facebook page (pictures, quotes) are eligible for use in the media.
If a high-profile artist posts something to Twitter that is relevant to a piece of news, it’s likely to become a part of the conversation. What bothers me is that she treated this story like a “gossip” piece, when really it dealt with a major label group of cash-raking jerks misappropriating a piece of modern day punk iconography, for the purpose of making more money. Or in other words, bourgeois assholes attempting to capitalize on someone else’s art, which is not cool at all.
